A Successful Sector Based Work Academy Course
Brilliant success story for 6 learners who attended our Sector Based Work Academy (SBWA) Skills for Confidence and Health & Social Care course at Thames Group Ambulance Service in Canvey!
This is the first time Thames Group have used SBWA to recruit staff, after such a successful course, it will not be their last time either, they have already informed us that they would like to run another SBWA course in the New Year. The first course was, Skills for Confidence, which ran over 4 days from 22nd October. The second course was Health and Social Care that ran over 5 days starting on 29th October. Once the learners had successfully completed both courses they were then invited to undertake a 3 week work experience. During this time the learners were asked to
complete a Maths and English assessment in which they needed to achieve a level 1 or above. If they successfully completed this assessment then they would go through to the next stage of the process, which was to complete a driving assessment. If the learners did not successfully complete both assessments they would be unable to finish their training with Thames Group as they would be unable to drive the ambulances or be able to read or calculate how much medication they may need to give someone.
Our learners passed the assessment process and therefore attended further training with Thames Group, which included:
- First Person on Scene (FPOS)
- Safeguarding Vulnerable Persons
- Fire Awareness
- Equality & Diversity
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Manual Handling
All 6 learners passed the course, assessments and training days and will start their first day of work at Thames Group on 17th November; they will also complete an apprenticeship with us. Thames Group held a presentation day, where the local MP for Castle Point and the Deputy Director of Operations for Thames Group, David Jones awarded our learners their certificates. There were 3 learners that received special awards. Along with their certificates they
received a trophy for, Ambulance Academy Best Recruit, Ambulance Academy Best Practical Student and Ambulance Academy Best Theory Student. The learners who attended the course are:
- Sarah Izatt – Ambulance Academy Best Recruit
- Tara Kelly – Ambulance Academy Best Practical Student
- Darren Vizor – Ambulance Academy
Best Theory Student
- Aaron Gray
- Lenard Albertelli
- Luke Nash
TheLightBulb would like to wish all these learners every success in their new roles and we look forward to working with them through their apprenticeship.
We are also working with Thames Group at their other branch in Ipswich, where we have another 6 learners who are going through the same process that the learners at Canvey have just gone through. TheLightBulb look forward to working alongside Thames Group and the Job Centre Plus.
